Don't Assume Pronouns

You should never assume someone's pronouns, especially w.r.t. a person's appearance or their name.

Under construction

Got opinions on why you shouldn't assume someone's pronouns? Or maybe some suggestions on what you should do instead?

Why?

On a fundamental basis, making assumptions based on appearance or name can be hurtful and disrespectful. Avoiding assumptions promotes a culture of inclusivity and respect.

Asking about someone's pronouns shows that you value and respect their identity on the most basic level.

Some feel that assuming is more convenient than asking because they're often accurate in their speculations. However, this practice only reinforces unfounded and damaging stereotypes regarding gender, promoting the notion that it exists solely as a binary concept of male or female.

What should I do instead?
